Summer 2018 at Camp Ak-O-Mak was the best summer I’ve ever had and truly one I will remember for the rest of my life. I couldn’t wait to attend the very best girls’ summer camp in Ontario! I was a bit nervous to spend 2 weeks of summer away from home and my family but I am so glad I took that leap. After a long year at school, I wanted to go on an adventure and try new things. I wanted the opportunity to be out in the great outdoors and try new sports. I also wanted to meet new people and make new friendships. Here are some suggestions on how to make the most of your girl’s summer camp experience.
What I Learned Summer 2018 at Camp Ak-O-Mak
• How to Disconnect from the Busy World
Summer 2018 at Camp Ak-O-Mak taught me how to disconnect and I absolutely loved disconnecting from my cell phone, screens and social media accounts. Those interactions aren’t real and can have the opposite effect of what they’re intended to do, like make people feel sad and lonely. Instead, I enjoyed real-life in-person interactions, experiences, adventures and friendships. I got to participate in water sports and get active. Ain’t nothing like the real thing!
• Self Confidence
I gained self-confidence by taking care of myself and being in a cabin with other girls. I was able to take care of my own needs, make my own bed and make new friends—all without any help from my family. That made me feel good about myself. My confidence also grew with all the accomplishments I made in improving my swimming skills.
• The Power of Girl Power and Bonding
I loved making close friendships with other girls like me who love sports. Together, we participated in a variety of land and water sports that I love, from fencing and cycling, to canoeing and kayaking. With my counselor and my cabin, together we felt like a team of our own.
• How to Swim / Improve my Swimming Skills – Swimming in Ahmic Lake
This camp is known for its swimming opportunities for girls like me. I was able to improve my competitive swimming skills by completing a 1.5 km open water swim along the camp’s beautiful shore to nearby “Rocky Reef”. Did you know Camp Ak-O-Mak was even recognized by the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame as a certified training center? I really felt like I was swimming at the best place to improve my skills. I even did my first triathlon and it was so cool!
• How to be Away from Home for 2 Weeks (a big deal for a 12 year old from the USA)
Since Camp Ak-O-Mak is so supportive, I had no problem being away from home. My counselors and cabin were so kind and caring. They made sure I felt comfortable and cheered me up when I felt a bit homesick. It didn’t take me long before I was having a blast and didn’t even have time to feel sad! And time sure flies when you’re having fun.
• How to make Friends with Girls of Different Cultures (from Mexico, Europe, United States, South America) – I even Learned to Count to 10 in Spanish!
Summer 2018 at Camp Ak-O-Mak gave me the chance to meet girls from all over the world, which I really loved. We shared stories about our home countries such as festivals, foods, school and customs. I learned so much from girls that were from different countries in Europe and South America. I even learned some French and Spanish. We are going to keep in touch for sure.
• Camp Fire/ Story Telling and Sing-a-Longs
On Sundays we had a really fun cookout and campfire. We got to spend time with our counsellors and cabin to chat, sing camp songs, enjoy story-telling, and bond as a group. I loved this time together because it felt cozy and I really felt like I belonged.
• The Colour Run
I loved participating in the Colour Run—a 5k run and dance party with the other girls. I got to run, sing and dance all afternoon and then we enjoyed the most delicious curry chicken dinner, plus more activities and dessert!
• Treasure Hunt
Another fun highlight at camp is the annual camp treasure hunt. We started off at Easter Island Head Rock and then teams divided up. Each team was led through 30 clues. At 8:00 pm the treasure hunt concluded and the clues were counted to see which team had the most. We also ate a delicious buffet dinner. Even the food here at camp is amazing.
As you can see, I really had the most incredible Summer 2018 at Camp Ak-O-Mak! I learned so much, had so many great experiences and adventures, and developed a lot of skills in swimming and other fun sports. I made new friendships that will last a lifetime. I even learned to speak a few words in different languages! I can’t wait to go back to Camp Ak-O-Mak next year. You can sign up for the camp’s newsletter to keep in the loop about what’s going on.
